The Senario

Your fishing a river system in a 17ft bass boat  and want to do a dropshot drift.

current is 3 knots.

There is NO wind. or waves.

will using a drift bag (sock) slow your drift down?

Mike

No... not one bit. A drift sock will slow you down if the wind is blowing... it's just going to drift along as fast as you are because everything is moving at the same speed.

Your trolling motor would do a better job than the drift sock.

Yes

When it gets hung up on a rock or log.

That was a real question.  I thought he was being facetious.

I agree with Ed that the trolling motor is the best approach
in slowing down and controling the boat in that situation.
Although a drift sock works well when compensating for
wind, I am confused as to if it helps slow down a boat in
current or not. I have found different opinions (for and
against) on the net.

Here is one of them:
``A sea anchor helps you stay close to your ditching site,
making it easier for searchers to find you if you have
relayed your location. Without a sea anchor, your raft may
drift over 160 kilometres in a day, making it much harder
to find you. You can adjust the sea anchor to act as a drag
to slow down the rate of travel with the current or as a
means to travel with the current. You make this adjustment
by opening or closing the sea anchor's apex. When open,
the sea anchor acts as a drag that keeps you in the general
area. When closed, it forms a pocket for the current to
strike and propels the raft in the current's direction.``

ments/sea/down_at_sea/index.shtml

(We got to keep in mind that not all drift socks have the
open and closed apex feature.)

There are however a couple of variables to keep in mind.
It is rare that there are days on the water when there is no
wind at all.

A drift sock will also reduce your boat from bouncing in the
waves (created by wind, wakes and to a lesser extent
current) and that will help you better control your
presentation (unless you're aiming for something really
erratic).

I had to figure that one out on my own... and trust me.. it
doesn't work in rivers!!

The drift sock just gets pushed by the current under the
boat... Like everyone said.. trolling motor is the way to go!

current is current , you cann't slow down current with drift sock. but you slow down when wind is stronger then current.

3 knot current means you will drift at that speed only way to slow down is anchor or electric moteur.

3 knot current with 10 knot winds a drift sock will slow you down.
